I used to think that I was called to the church, and this may be true, but the real issue was that I believed that I was not called to the lost. I would admire my friends who were effortless evangelist, who seemed to have brought most of the congregation into the church, and I would think to myself, “I am not like that, “I cannot do that,” I am not gifted in that way,” and “God has called to speak to believers, not to the lost.”
So, what changed? My heart changed. The more time I spent with God, the more I began to see his love for everyone. I began to see a dying world. I saw people who were living in bondage, without knowing it. I saw people who were searching for a love that I have found, and I began to have compassion on them. I saw people who needed a touch from God and needed to experience his love and kindness. My preaching to the church and making quippy Facebook posts for the body of Christ was not going to save them, but I realized an encounter with the living God would. I realized that I was His mouth piece and His hands, and that Jesus was the perfect model for what my life should look like. He shared the Kingdom of God with everyone he encountered.
Evangelism is not for just some of the church, but for the whole church. All those who have accepted Jesus are called to be salt and light to the world and should not keep the Kingdom of God a secret. We do this first by knowing who we are in Christ, and then by realizing that God loves all those we encounter, and finally we step out in faith.
